LR4 edits in "Develop" not reflected in Smugmug

Changes I make to photos in LR4 are not appearing in Smugmug. Any changes to contrast, exposure, cropping, etc. aren't reflect in the photos uploaded to SmugMug. The only change that is reflected is rotating the image (but I did this within Library and not Develop).

I have tried uploading the originals, virtual copies, and even having the SmugMug app create virtual copies of the photos to upload via the dialogue box when creating a new gallery.

I know that LR4 does not make physical changes to the files. My guess is that SmugMug is not reading LR4 info properly.

Is there a work around other than saving a new physical copy of the file after editing?

If you are just doing normal uploading of JPEG images to Smugmug (not doing some kind of synchronizing from Lightroom), then you need to export your images from Lightroom to a temporary directory and then upload those exported images. That is the only way that Lightroom changes are "baked" into a JPEG. Lightroom changes are not saved to your original images at all so uploading those original images will not include most Lightroom changes. This workflow is required because of the way Lightroom (and Aperture and iPhoto and several other image editing programs work).

If you wish to upload directly from Lightroom, you would need to use one of the available plugins. Either SmugMug's or Jeffrey's.
The plugins would apply changes you make within Lightroom on the fly to your original before uploading.

Jfriend and rainforest, thanks for your response.

I understand how LR4 / Apeture / iPhoto do not change the originals. I am using LR4 and the SmugMug publish app.

Maybe these screen shots will more accurately describe the problem:

I uploaded the gallers via SmugMug's LR4 app. The original is on the left, then I created three virtual copies. The first is just rotated. The second is rotated + B&W. The third is rotated + B&W + cropped:

As you can see, only the rotation of the image is reflected in SmugMug after publishing:

Can you make sure that you have the latest Lightroom and plugin installed?
Also check your Lightroom publishing manager > SmugMug > republishing settings to ensure it's set to republish "file and metadata".

After making sure of that, right click on a published photo that isn't showing properly in the SmugMug gallery and select 'mark for republish'. Then click on publish.

    Solved
RF, thanks for another quick response.

I downloaded the SM app 3-4 days ago. Need to go back and check, but 99% sure it's most current.

I think I figured it out, and processing done in LightRoom is now reflected in SmugMug when I republish the gallery.

What solved the problem for me was changing the Upload setting from "Original" to "JPEG" (in the settings of the SM app for LR4). I guess it makes sense, that w/o being told to create a JPEG, the APP would just snatch the 'originals' from the HD w/o processing the edits. This would be helpful for backing up one's Light Room library.

My conclusion is that "JPEG" must be selected in order for LR4 edits to be published. Is this correct?

Ah, yes, that makes sense. I didn't think of that setting. I'm glad you figured it out.
