I was light painting this week-end when I noticed hundreds of "stars" all over my shot.
The funny thing is that night it was cloudy and stars couldnt be seen.
I then put the cap over the lens took a pictures for 2 minutes (bulb) and notices the same "stars"
Is this some kind of noise/pixels???????????????????

Since I rarely do night photography this is the first time that I see that, during day light the camera is just fine.

Sounds like it if you see it with the lens cap on the camera when shooting.

Long time exposures, > 30 seconds, tend to display noise on digital cameras, unless you do a dark frame noise reduction with the camera. But I rarely do dark frame noise reduction as it takes as long as the original exposure, and it can usually be taken care of later in software by some means.

There are numerous PS plug ins to add back the grain that has been removed from the change from film to digital imagery.ne_nau.gif

Does this mean we can start 'discussing' whether my camera brand has prettier noise than another's camera brand?

Or what plug ins can emulate the background noise the best?

I would ask, is it really noise you are seeing? or are you seeing some hot pixels? I have a 5d and have shot some long exposures where, yes I did havesome noise, but I also had some "stars" showing up in my shots. I did call canon and they said in some cameras I can experience some "Hot Pixels" on long exposures. I have never really done anything to correct the issue in my camera except in post. So I have no resolution to a hot pixel, but it may be something to research for a fix.
