Is there a way to see the thumbs up or downs in password protected galleries? Had a friend tell me they went through pics and thumbs up'd some of them, but I can't see them and they do not show up in my popular file because of being password protected.

As far as I know thumbs up in a password-protected gallery is not exposed. From the help page at http://help.smugmug.com/customer/portal/articles/93248:

Photos from unlisted and/or password-protected galleries will not show up in popular photos on your homepage or on SmugMug's pages.

If you need to see the viewer's preferences (and you have a Business level smug account) you might want to look into using Events - http://help.smugmug.com/customer/portal/articles/83125-can-my-customers-mark-their-favorites-market-events-.
