I liked several of the images posted. The thing is, I think because people challenged the method that I created my image that caused me to lose votes. I believe I had a winning image this time, and really don't understand how people vote. It feels like the same people win all the time.

Since what I would like to say to this would be politically incorrect... I will just keep my mouth shut.

I'm just saying how I feel this time. People led me to believe I had a winning image up until I was asked how I created it. I'm very upset about this challenge. It appears to me that no matter how good of an image I produce it won't be good enough.

People have different opinions of images, so no matter what you do somebody will like it and somebody won't. And then...even people who like it as a stand-alone image may decide that other images please them more when asked to vote and choose favorites.

I may be a little weird about how I vote. I usually look first at does it fit the theme (to me), then I look for 'quality' of the image (how good it is all around), then I look at 'uniqueness' (for want of a better word). If I see a really well-done image, but it's too similar to others that have been done (or over-done) before, then I am less likely to vote for it even if I 'like' it. Sometimes it is just a matter of personal preference.

I rarely vote for the winner, so that must say something for my taste in images. ne_nau.gif I did not vote for the winning image this time because to me it was too similar to dozens of other images I have seen--including the one from this Dgrin tutorial: http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=202840. Jenn, I do like your image. I liked some of your other light-painting images better than the one you chose, but that was just my taste. Also, just because I like your image (and I still DO like it), there were a couple of another images in the challenge gallery that I liked more. Again, just my personal preference. Nothing personal and no slam against how you did it.

I understand your feelings though. These challenges are supposed to be fun learning experiences. I used to enter every week. I felt like I learned a good bit, but I too was disappointed when I received great feedback and then didn't come close when it came time to vote. If you dwell on that, it will take all the fun out of the challenges and out of your photography hobby. I wrestled with that for a time and finally decided not to enter the challenges regularly any more. When the theme really interests me, I might join in, but usually I prefer to sit out. I still love to look at what everyone comes up with and I often will go out and try to get something to fit the theme (usually after the deadline for entry), but I do it for me and me alone. I have found that I am much happier with my photography when I don't get all wrapped up in how many votes my image received in a challenge or who liked it and who didn't. In fact, I am still enjoying a theme from a couple of years ago--Alphabet photography. Ever since that challenge, I look for letters everywhere! It's really fun.

So Jenn, keep shooting because you enjoy it; realize that some will like your results and some won't; and don't let the ones who don't like it get you down.

I know people have different likes and dislikes, and I got used to never expecting to win and that was ok. ... But this time they made me believe my image was a winner. I've never been so disappointed in a challenge since I've been here.</snip>

There were 39 votes cast in this challenge... unless 39 people told you that your shot was clearly the best of what was posted in the gallery, then I'm just not sure how anyone made you believe you'd be the winner. 17 votes for your shot is not a bad showing. We've all had times in the challenges where we thought maybe our shot would have done better than it did in voting. As for me, I try not to take it too seriously when that happens and I try to objectively look at my entry and see what I could have done better or just chalk it up to subjective tastes.

With that said, it really bothers me that anyone would post such comments as you have in the results thread (including the ones you later deleted)... it's really poor form to basically complain that you should have won and turn the thread into a pity party for yourself. I've been trying to bite my tongue here... but how would you like if when you place in a round or even win that someone comes along and starts this kind of stuff? I have never seen anything like this in the year and a half plus that I've been participating in challenges. Am I now supposed to feel guilty for winning?

The matter is now at rest. Please lets just keep this as a congrates thread. No one should feel guilty for winning. I think what Jen is feeling is frustration and it has been noted. There have been no delete posts on this thread and I do not see Jen slamming any of the winners for winning. I am sure we all have experienced at one time or another these feelings. But for future frustrations, I think it best to post in its own thread or pm me. Thank you.

If the truth were known, I'm sure there are more people than myself who have been disappointed and/or frustrated by the same thing I am, and just never said anything. I'm frustrated AND disappointed to see that no matter how good people tell me my image is, it won't matter when it comes to the vote. It's not about you specifically ... it just doesn't matter what advice people give, how much I try, or how much advice I listen to.

On that note.....let's move on! I had a great image this time around and totally blew it by forgetting to link to the EXIF's.....can't remember the last time I had sooooo much fun with a challenge and created so many rewarding images trying to meet the challenge! And then I didn't do the right thing when it came to posting because I hurried. Which is especially ironic considering how very long it took me to paint that harp with my lights. D'oh. I enjoyed seeing the interpretations of the theme this time around. Congrats to the winners and everyone who contributed gets a pat on the back....without the dynamics of the multiple competitors, there wouldn't be anything to compete against.

Since I really don't know anyone, I vote more or less like slpollett. I first look to see if the photo fits the parameters of the theme. (And this is true in other venues as well. For instance if the theme is Through the Water Surface, I won't vote for a photo taken in an aquarium through the glass, or one that was taken from in the water unless it is pointed back up at the water surface, and I won't vote for one that is a reflection because that shows JUST the surface. Some reflections are OK, but I have to see something on the other side of the surface, if you know what I mean.) Then I look to see how good a photo it is and whether it is unique in the challenge. If there are five sunset photos, I probably won't vote for any of them or if I do vote, I only vote for the one I like best. Then I just vote for ones that I like best. I tend not to like photos with a huge intrusive watermark across a photo even if it is a good photo underneath.

I think some people vote only on how difficult the photo was to accomplish, but unless it is part of the challenge, I don't think that is appropriate, and since I don't have a very good grasp of and don't really pay attention to the monikers the people have, that doesn't influence me much. So I don't think anyone could accuse me of just voting for friends. I think there is some of that in almost any community - it's kind of inevitable unless the person's screen name is stripped from the image.

I did not get any votes this time - I probably should have redone the photo with some of the others that I tried later as they were maybe better, but I was learning something, and that was sufficient. I might not have gotten any votes either way.

Your harp image was one of my favorites! I really couldn't figure out how you created it, either.
