Hi y'all,

One thing I have learned is that when you spot a subject who isn't bothered by your presence its good to sit with it for awhile. it takes some patience but you will usally be rewarded with a few photo ops. Here's a couple of sequences I captured at the Viera Wetlands recently.

The green heron is a quiet and patient hunter and will just stay still for long periods while he looks for prey.

when he spots potential prey he moves in closer
45723680-L.jpg

He takes a closer look
45723682-L.jpg

he strikes
45723684-L.jpg

He's sucessful and in the end he does the Reznick Flip
45723686-L.jpg

the tri-colored heron like the green is a patient huter but he's usually a bit more animated
45723694-L.jpg

when he spots his prey he likes to get down a tad for a better look
45723690-L.jpg

like the green heron he ends a successful strike with a Reznick Flip

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

It is fascinating how effective these fellas are at spearing or capturing fish, since the fish are NOT where they see them in the water, due to refraction of light at the waters surface.

If you have ever tried to spear fish while looking at them above the water, you quickly realize you need to adjust your point of aim a significant distance. This is particularly true when you get closer to the water's surface and look at the surface more obliquely like these hunters.

    Nice series Harry!

With global warming and all, I wonder how long before I see all that in the winter?

    Cool catches any which way.

Thanks Ginger but I'm sorry to tell you that global warming won't bring any birds to your area soon enough. You are going to have to go to them.
