I am LOVING that you can customize until your heart is content. BUT can be ULTRA intimidating for newcomers.

I'm just curious if Smugmug is planning to streamline the process. It seems like its on the right track! What's the future of Smugmug?? I'd love to see a backend similar to Photoshelter. IE an easier way to manage photos/galleries.

    Ability to
... customize until your heart is content ...
is not really called "ULTRA intimidating" or even "intimidating". This particular feature of the SM service is called programming, website designing, and is truly meant for technologists who are proficient and experienced in this area of business. When you buy a new vehicle - do you complain to the car manufacturer it is so complex that you cannot fix or modify it on your own? No, you don't:) You go to someone who is trained to work with and understand cars- to the car mechanics.

Ability to make regular customization that are easily understandable by an average computer user, are in fact (and I agree with you on this part) more limited in SmugMug services than in some others on the market. ZenFolio is a perfect example. An easy to understand customization option in ZenFolio photohosting platform will allow you to create a better looking site than similar (easy to understand customization) feature in SmugMug services. But so far only SM allows me to
... customize until your heart is content ...

I'd really like to see a backend where you can manage photos and galleries without having to go through your website. It can get clunky doing it that way, jumping between the UI of your website and the Smugmug UI of gallery settings and account settings, etc.

All you really need to do is open two browser windows, one to the customization and one to your site. After making changes, just refresh your site window.
