Time lapse Q's

Hey everyone!
Just picked up a 70-200 f 2.8 IS L lens. Amazing quality! Have it on the t3i. Will be upgrading the body next year but in the mean time I want to get into some time lapses! I know I need a intervalometer for my camera. But what do I need for software. I run a MacBook and a Mac desktop, are there any free programs available? I have a tripod as well obviously! Haha
Thanks for any info!

The easiest Timelapse software I have used is Picasa. I have only used it on Windows PC but they have it for Mac. It's super easy to use.

    Isaac,

I use a very simple Lightroom plugin that exports whatever photos you select as a 24FPS movie. Free, easy, and you never need to leave Lightroom. Now all you need is 300-600 images :)

Actually there is. Check out MagicLantern. It's a free firmware add-on which extends the video capability of Canon DSLRs, including the T3i. It also contains a built-in intervalometer function.

Magic Lantern has been around for a while and is pretty widely used. However, any time you mess with a device's firmware, there is the potential to turn your device into a "brick" if something goes wrong. I've not heard of this happening, but it might be worth spending some time reading the user forums to see if there have been any reports of problems especially with your camera model.

You can also find lower cost h/w intervalometers around the net if you don't want to mess with firmware.

I also recently got the new Gopro Hero3. Which has time lapse built in. I want to do a time lapse with that as well. So now I just need a program for my computer that will make it. Hmmm...

    Isaac,

Your right. Lightroom isn't free. You can get a 30 day trial though. I have a GoPro 3 as well. I have made timelapse through LR from it, but maybe the GoPro editing software can do it? You would think it would, since they sell timelapse as a big part of their product. I can look through the software tomorrow. There is a free version, so it should work.

I found that my video editing software can make a time lapse. I did one yesterday with my gopro. Came out ok. Going to Hunts right now to pick up a intervalometer and a new tripod. Mine is a little outdated.

You should be able to use Canon's EOS utility to do a time-lapse from your laptop (the software disc should have come with your camera)...there are issues with it not running on the latest OSX operating system so you may have to download EOS utility updater from Canon's website.

I shoot most of my time-lapses with the GoPro these days. I started fearing for the life of my DSLR's mirror when taking so many shots in such a short period of time although I'm sure it can withstand it.
