Oops I F'ed up on a Multi Gallery Move

For reasons not worth going into I accidentally moved all my galleries into one. Yes I saw the warning, yes I ignored the warning.
So what is the easiest way of reorganizing galleries - the "select galleries" pull down process is tedious. Is there a checkbox/radio button view that can accomplish the same thing or any other option?
Well every person you can know,
And every place that you can go,
And any thing that you can show,
You know they're nouns.

YIKES!! I'm assuming you moved all of your galleries to a single category. There really isn't a quick option to reorganize your galleries. The fastest method at this point in time would be for you to select the galleries using the multiple galleries tab, and move them to the categories you want them in.

Wish I had an easier choice for you. If you use windows, Star Explorer might be a good choice for you to look at, and of course the Lightroom uploader works well for organizing your galleries, if you have Lightroom. Take a look here at the third party apps that are available. Maybe one of them will help: http://help.smugmug.com/customer/portal/articles/84267

Yep, yikes. Oh well this is what I get for being careless.
So the Lightroom option...I do have it and have used it to publish some galleries but I had way more galleries on SM than I do in LR. So the next time I launch LR what do I do? Just republish everything?

Have you synched your hierarchy? In your SmugMug/Lightroom plugin, right click on a category, and select "Edit Category" then select synch hierarchy. This will populate all of the galleries you have created through the SmugMug interface. After you do this, synch the photos in the gallery where you moved all the photos too.

Then, when you have all of those images, simply drag them from the film strip to the original gallery that you just imported via the "Synch Hierarchy" step. This will copy the image into the desired gallery.

This will ONLY work for images in your current LR catalog though. If you have multiple catalogs, I believe you will have to do the synch steps over again in all the other catalogs.

Let me know if this makes sense :)

I think it's working. I started syncing the hierarchy and photos for one of my large sections last night and it looks like the galleries are coming back. I still have quite a bit work to do but at least this step is automated. Thanks.

What a heck of a problem! Yikes!

I've done this on smaller scales (2-3 galleries into one), and the fastest way I found to fix the problem was to move files from just one gallery to another en mass. So if you combined three galleries to one, move from the big one back to one of the other two. Then do the other one. This would work for any number of galleries. Just watch the gallery size as you can only work with about 10k images in the mass move tool from what I recall.

And I just thought of this, but you can probably use this in conjunction with the lightroom idea if lr is uploading files again. It will sense the existing file and skip it.

Well I am about four days into the LR Publish sync process. Hopefully it will be done tonight. From what I have read about this feature it will probably present me with a ton on "is this a dupe?" alerts.
Ironically this situation occurred as I was planning a wholesale rebuild so it has given me plenty of time to think about how I want the site set up.

Up until now I have used SM for two reasons. "Archiving" and showing off family photos to family only as well as a means to distribute photos of the various teams my kids play on. I have not used it as a portfolio but that will be changing.

And that is where I have come to realize that one of the big feature requests and one that I am interested in and have seen discussed is the sub-sub categories (or some variation of multiple levels).

I have played around with Smart Galleries but the 1000 photo limit is, well limiting. I will be attempting to use Collections as a means to achieve a version of the structure I envision.

While I am hopeful that the much talked about backend revamp will show up soon I am not waiting to see if it does. I am forging ahead with the available tools. The workarounds are interesting but I'd rather use stock components.

Anyway, thanks again for providing suggestions, this community is quite helpful.

Whew this is the mistake that keeps on giving. After days of syncing I was presented with 5700 conflicts. After 30 or 40 reviews I gave up and ended the process. The conflicts were based on file names which I figured there would be quite a few. According to the info I could find about the conflict resolution module it also looked at file dimensions and the time stamp. From the few conflicts I reviewed the file name was only commonality. Some of the photos were taken years apart and the system still flagged them as the same.

Anyway, the final gotcha ya I experienced was the fact over the years I had exported catalogs out of my main catalog in order to keep things more tidy locally. That forgotten bit of information came back to me at the conclusion of the sync.

So the good news, kinda, is that the sync photos/hierarchy does work. It's incredibly slow and if you have multiple LR catalogs there will be issues.

For now, it's time for a Manhattan and to think about how I want to rebuild my photo world. Thanks again for the help.

And I have to add that the misuse of the Move All Galleries command be added to the list of classic blunders "Never get involved in a land war in Asia" and "Never go against a Sicilian when death is on the line" .

I hate to hear this didn't work out for you. :-(. I know reorganizing was probably jot on the immediate agenda this week.

If you have a problem with duplicates, I have a small tool I developed that may help. Pm me if you want to try it out.

Uncool, can you send me the URL for your site, so I can look at it to make sure I understand what your looking at?

    Thanks!
