Less of Kathryn...But somehow, More!

This is Kathryn,

She came to me in August for a boudoir/sexy shoot for her boyfriend who's currently serving in Afghanistan. I asked her back then if she'd be interested in modelling for me, and we finally got it together today. Here are a few of my favourites. Trying to get away from white backgrounds that I use with the kids, although I still have some in this shoot.

What do you think?

Very pretty girl and I like the pose in 4 . Plus, as a headshot devotee, I like them all except on my screen they are all a bit underexposed.

    Nice job.

They are I think. I need to look at that again - I was going for darker, but more people have said they are under so I will try again. :)

    Cheers

Definitely underexposed on this calibrated monitor - you can bump them up quite a lot before you've gone too far....

Mine's calibrated as well...just didn't want the images bright, however, having seen a couple of rough re-works by others I have to agree that they need a lift. :)

    Cheers

I think these are nice shots, but need some work. I think to get a darker / moody type of look you will need a re-shoot, but maybe others have a solution for that.

Here is a rework I did. (Hope you don't mind, will delete if you want.)

Exposures right on Sam's edit. Color looks a bit pink/orange though.

Much better. Still a tad under but at this point, it's personal taste.

Thanks. I do tend to the dark side in this sort of image I think. As you say, it becomes a personal taste thing when you get so far. They were definitely under to start with and I like the edits, even though they take away that darkness that i wanted. I need to re-shoot to get the darkness. :)

Nice, thanks. I think they are bordering on the "too bright" for me, but that was what the lighting gave. I need more experience with lighting things other than kids on white b/g which I can do with my eyes closed almost. Will practise again when kathryn comes back next week. :)

You've nailed the problem - you started out with a lighting setup for bright, slightly flat, traditional lighting. You can't make that "dark and moody" simply by dialling back the brightness (especially with a fair-skinned face); bringing down the brightness in post simply makes them underexposed, not "moody".

Try shooting for shadows instead of light. Try with one light more to the side, and keep your fill ratio wider (meaning, less light on the fill side). Try one light +reflector. Experiment with a Rembrandt setup.

    Have fun!

Thanks. Yes, I plan a re shoot. Kathryn is coming back to pose for me again. :)

    :)
