"smart galleries" and stats....

Here's the question:

If you have a "smart gallery" and collect photos from your other gallery, where to the "hits" on the images show up in stats, are they in the smart gallery where the viewer is clicking or in the original gallery?

I ask because I created a new gallery mostly from other images and am getting a lot of hits on the feeder galleries but not on the new one.

Tx

    Hey Rich,

Hits will always be applied to the original gallery. Not only for Smart Gallery or Collections, but also for external posts, as well.

If seeing the specific gallery hits is something that's important to you, then you will want to make a copy of the images and post the copies, so they have stand alone stats.

    Hope that helps!

Unfortunately that's just not correct. No clue if the hits show up on the original gallery or not, but they definitely show up on the smart gallery. Smart galleries do have their own stats that show up just fine.

    Jay,
I think you may have misunderstood what Lindy said. She said that hits are always applied to the original gallery, meaning the gallery the photos were collected *from* or are the *source* for smart gallery photos.

Therefore she suggested that you make copies of photos you'd like to keep track of separately. By copies she meant a physical copy by using the "make a copy" tool or reuploading the photo.

    Hope this clarifies it.

    Hi Sebastian,

It's still not quite jiving, but maybe there is a difference between galleries made from "collected" photos and smart galleries where the content is built from rules.

On smart galleries built from rules, if someone views a photo in the smart gallery, the hit definitely is counted against the smart gallery. No clue if it is also counted against the source gallery of the photo (it shouldn't be IMO, but haven't tried to test that).

Do stats on "collected" photos work differently than they do on rule-based smart galleries?

    Thanks,
    Jay

Building a smart gallery in Lightroom (using rules) and uploading it to Smugmug (using the Smugmug plugin) creates separate image copies for each gallery the image appears in.

This means stats are counted for 'image in gallery' rather than the image itself.

The smart galleries (using rules) I'm talking about are the ones in SM, not in LR. What you state about doing it in LR is correct, but that's a different thing.

    Jay,
That's not what I see in my own testing. I checked out photos from a smart gallery and collected photos and in both cases, the hits went straight to the original gallery the photos were uploaded to. No hits were recorded on the smart gallery / collected photos.

If you see differently, post a link to the smart gallery in question where you see hits on smart gallery photos.

Sure, here's one for you: smart gallery (using rules)

That gallery (and all of my other smart galleries that use rules) show hits in SM Stats.

Update: In case it helps, I see hits for that gallery on Gallery Trends, Photo Trends and Popularity tabs on the Stats page. I don't see any data for it on the Gallery Details tab.

Since there's nothing showing in the gallery details, this might be a bug as to my knowledge photos in smart galleries do not create any hits on the smart gallery.

I can't reproduce this in my own smart gallery.

I'll pass it on to our QA team for further investigation. For now, I would recommend to ignore these stats on smart galleries and to go to the original gallery the photo is in to view stats and details.

I hope the answer to this is NOT to eliminate the stats I'm seeing on smart galleries. Those stats are useful and would be a definite step backwards. Do you really want users consuming more disk space for SM because they had to create extra copies to get the stats they wanted?
