Very nice, Eric. That is definitely some angry water. It was water like that, years ago, that broke some vertebra in my back....gave me a lasting respect for the power of nature.

I always wanted to lie naked on a bearskin rug in front of a fireplace. Cracker Barrel didn't take kindly to it.

I see the surfer's had enough sense to stay away from the peir in seas like that...good way to get squished. Nice action shot.

Hi Tom, thanks for the look..... Wow! - plane mishaps, bone-breaking surf, you've had some wild adventures! (I'll bet there is more :lurk) - good thing photography is usually safe. :D

Thanks for the comment Dr C, appreciated..... There were a couple of hardy souls out that day, but it was so big and rough that rides were few - it was all they could do to get out to the zone. But you're right, they stayed a sensible distance from the pier.

Truth be told, Eric, I had no business being out surfing when I hurt my back. A strong nor'easter storm had whipped up the surf along Jacksonville Beach to a level we rarely saw. During my last fall, I suffered a severe bruise to my lower back. Speculation was that I either got pounded into the board or the board was thrust into my back by all the turbulent tumbling going on. In any event, I suffered two fractured vertebra and a herniated disc in the L4 region of the spine. I actually got to shore and made it home before the severity of the deal set in. Surgery ensued.

I was real lucky in the plane episode. Damn two-stroke engine in the Ultra Light just quit on me at about 500 to 600 feet elavation....contaminated fuel was the culprit. I set the thing down in a small lake surrounded by mangrove forests. I got away from that part with only a badly scraped left knee and a bad gash in my right hand. I swam over to the mangroves and had to traverse about 300 yards through that stuff before my cousins in an airboat could get to me. Damned mangroves mauled me worse than setting the plane down. All around, it was a sorry afternoon.

Yikes - harrowing circumstances, but interesting stories.... I'm glad you made it out the other side!
I've had 30 years of similar back problems, so, as Bill Clinton famously said: "I feel your pain"
Stay safe in the New Year!

Epic picture. It's amazing that pier can take a pounding like that.

My thoughts exactly Joel - when you see the amount of rust stains on the pilings, it seems that it can't last forever (nothing does, of course). The pier had been closed the day before.

I know there are places with bigger waves, but this is epic conditions for locals - here's the few studs that were livin' the OB dream that day....

I shot the Huntington Beach Pier (the old one - ca 1969) and it scared the bejesus out of me...it's one of those things probably like diving from a 10 meter platform, doesn't look so bad from the cheap seats. I got away with any number of bad could have beens and lived to tell about it...but never even gave doing it again another thought. So, when I look at these three guys, I know what's going through their heads...meh, manana hombres....better waves tomorrow.
