My uploads have slowed down

I am uploading galleries using the SmugMug Lightroom 4 plugin (current version according to "check for updates"). I don't have stats to show it but it seems to me like my uploads are going a lot slower than they used to. According to speedtest.net my isp continues to provide the upload and download rates I've always had. I feel like this has been happening for a week or so. Anyone else seeing slow uploads?

The larger the uploads the slower they get progressively in Lightroom as a result of the way it does the temp file. I have spent time talking with the SmugMug team about it and it is reproducible in a few different ways. If you also export to a local drive Lightroom will slow down as the export continues. My work around has been to do a few small uploads when possible.

Sorry don't have any better news. I am just now downloading the latest LR plugin and will keep on eye on its performance as well

Have you tried removing the temporary files LR creates?

If you are running Windows, there are a couple of things you should check. If you're operating off of a single disk, you need to make sure there is sufficient space to create temporary files and that the drive is not too fragmented.

I have seen the slow performance within LR as well.

Where are the lightroom temp files? I will remove them and see if that helps. My hd has over 20% of its capacity available so I don't think that should be an issue.

20% is about the min you want to keep free.

    Here's Adobe's recommendation.

Also, have you optimized your LR catalog recently?

That should happen somewhat regularly and automagically. But if you haven't, it's worth the effort.
It also shouldn't affect uploads. Sounds like what's happening is some temp file just gets bigger the more stuff you have to transfer.

Ian, how do you set the Catalog optimization to Auto? I have searched for a way, but never found one :(

There's a check box in the catalog backup dialog. If it's checked, optimization happens every time the catalog is backed up. You set the frequency for backups in "Lightroom -> Catalog Settings".

Ok, I deleted my temp files, and a bunch of others including emptying the recycle bin and now I have about 30% of my disk space open. I checked how fragmented my disk is and it says it is 0% fragmented. Disk defrag is scheduled to run automatically every week. My catalog is optimized every time I back up my catalog which is weekly or so. My catalog contains 55,000 images.

I have basketball games to shoot tomorrow and Thursday evenings. I will let you know how the upload to SmugMug goes.

    Thanks for the help guys.

Great, thanks Bob! Keep us posted.

Ian, I knew that method...but I am that guy that rarely backs up his catalog, and then cries myself to sleep when it finally gets corrupted with no backup 11doh.gif

I have been meaning too...did I ever tell you about the 3 weeks worth of photos from my first and only time in Europe that I never backed up off an external hard drive? One that proceeded to blow up? Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaa:nah

My background is storage management. I've heard a lot of stories like that...sad every time.

    Bradford,

I never thought of that. Great idea and easy to follow blog post! If you have SmugVault, will the PhotoSynch app upload the RAWs?

    Michael-

Thanks. I don't have SmugVault, I have not found a way to upload anything other than JPEG's through PhotoSync. I was hopping Dropbox's latest rev would bring the upload option but it has not. My solution for the RAWs is amazingly low tech but effective. I go to the hotel's biz center and use their computer to upload from CF/reader to my JungleDisk account. I have found that JungleDisk gives me same upload speed as SmugMug as they appear to use the same Akamai/S3 infrastructure.

Hey Brad, one thing I noticed is that you have two different upload settings. One for WiFi and one for Cellular. If you're using this for backup, you want the settings to be the same. Preferably as close to the original format as possible.

All the other parts, consistent process, keeping two copies of everything-it's all good. Just if you want two copies really, then the settings have to be exact.

I purposely kept it low on the Cell usage after a surprising bill. I agree that for backup it needs to be the same.
