Watermarking - time and technique

How method in smugmug do you use to watermark your images? Using the dropdown menu when you are looking at gallery images or do you use the gallery settings menu?

My watermarks are real inconsistent and don't show up for a long time. If you change your watermark should you first remove it?

Also, when I go to my gallery settings, why do the current setting not show up? Under quick settings it always says none - even though I used quick settings and gave it a name.

Thanks for your help!

    Hi Leslie,

Thank you for contacting SmugMug. I will gladly look into that for you :)

As far as the watermarks go. Changing to a new watermark in gallery settings only changes the watermark for all future uploaded photos to that gallery. If you would like to change the watermark for the photos in other galleries, click on the gallery, click "tools", scroll down to "many photos", click "more", click "watermarking". There you can choose which images you would like to add or remove a watermark.

When using quick settings, there is not an indication of what settings you are using when looking at gallery settings. If you look at the individual settings, you can see if the ones you set as your quick setting are being applied correctly.

If you need anything else, please let us know.

Thank you for clarifying how watermarking works. Also, aproximately how long should it take for the watermarks to show on the image after I apply it to the gallery using the methods you described?
    Thanks again!

    Leslie,

The speed of the watermarking process is based on server load. Sometimes, in slow periods on the servers, it can be almost instant. Other times, it can take a little longer. Don't worry, they will be there :D

Please let us know if you have any questions!

if you watermark often, watermarking automatically upon upload saves a lot of time. I use a quicksetting on the gallery and then just upload away!

?? When I change my watermark in gallery settings I see a checkbox for; Apply to existing photos in gallery

Does this not do what I think it should? Has seemed to work for me as expected.

    Hi Mike,

If you check the box to Apply to existing photos, it will simply watermark all the photos you have in the gallery already. It would be the same as going to Tools--->Many Photos--->Watermarking and Selecting All.

Turning the feature on will also automatically watermark any photos added to the gallery afterwards.

    Hope this helps!

Hi, I'm trying to create my own transparent watermark. I'm not using Photoshop and all the instructions I've found seem to assume I am.
I have a Mac with Safari or Firefox. Can someone direct me to how to do this.

    Thanks !

What app are you using? The steps are often similar in different apps. All that's needed is for you to create a new file with a transparent background and for you to add your watermark text on top of that. Then save the file in PNG format to preserve the transparent background.

If you're not sure on how to do that in your app, you can check out the Finishing School forum which is the place you can ask questions on editing and workflow for the specific app you use.

If you don't have a photo editing app or are unsure how to create a transparent image with it, check out this suggestion from the Finishing School forum.

The links Sebastian referenced should help to get you started. But in case you did want to give it a try in Photoshop, there is a 30 Day free trial available
