Thinking Long-- Buy Sigma 150-500 or Rent Nikon 200-400?

I have been thinking of getting a much longer lens than my 70-200 for shooting Motocross and the WidowMaker Hill climb. A longer lens will offer me some new angles. And keep me further out of harms way. Especially at the Widowmaker. I would be able to sit on across the hill and shoot from an entirely new angle bypassing the sagebrush that is a problem when you are on the hill.
Question is, will the Sigma have good enough AF to track motorcycle riders? Or will it yield mediocre results and just be a waste of time and cause me to loose money instead helping make money?
Or just rent a 200-400 for about $240 a weekend and suck it up?
Or will neither of these have the results I am looking for and I should just go with a 400 or 500 telephoto? Why I am shying away from this option is the flexibility of the zoom for getting good position.
