Subdomain troubles

I think I need some assistance in setting up my smugmug galleries as a subdomain.

Up until now I have hosted my galleries on smugmug with no custom domain (jirphoto.smugmug.com)
I just recently got my own domain, ringstadfoto.no (there is no content there yet) where I intend to host my main web site as a front end to my smugmug galleries.
I then set up a subdomain "galleries.ringstadfoto.no" which I intend to point to my existing smugmug galleries.

I followed the instructions on how to set up a custom domain as best as I could by doing the following:
- In the Advanced DNS Zone editor in my website control panel I set the CNAME record for "galleries.ringstadfoto.no" to "domains.smugmug.com" and removed the A record for the same subdomain (not sure I should have done this?).
- In the smugmug control panel I set custom domain to "galleries.ringstadfoto.no"

Now, when I type "galleries.ringstadfoto.no" into my Firefox web browser I end up at "http://domains.smugmug.com/" and not in my galleries.

What is also confusing is that the results are not completely consistent across web browsers.
If I type "galleries.ringstadfoto.no" in Firefox I am redirected to "http://domains.smugmug.com/"
If I type the same in Internet Explorer I only get an empty web page (says "Index of /")
Also,
if I type the same address with "www." in front in Firefox I get the same empty web page as in IE.
In this case I get the same result in IE.

Having little or no previous knowlegde of DNS and CNAME records etc. I am a bit lost here at the moment.
Is this problem caused by incorrect configuration or could it be that there are some delays in updating DNS across the net?

Some more information, below are the records I see in my DNS Zone Editor (I have omitted the records that deal with mail, ftp, etc.)

"ringstadfoto.no."............. "A" ......... "213.162.240.23"
"localhost.ringstadfoto.no." "A" ......... "127.0.0.1"
"www.ringstadfoto.no." .... "CNAME" .. "ringstadfoto.no"
"whm.ringstadfoto.no." .... "A" .......... "213.162.240.23"
"ringstadfoto.no." ........... "TXT" ....... "v=spf1 +a +mx +ip4:213.162.240.23 ?all"
"galleries.ringstadfoto.no." . "CNAME" .. "domains.smugmug.com"

If anyone can se any obvius mistakes here I would be grateful, as I must admit this is quite a bit outside my field of competence.

As far as I can tell, the domain setup for galleries.ringstadfoto.no appears to be correct. For a subdomain, you only need the one CNAME record for the domain, pointing that domain at domains.smugmug.com, which is what you are showing here. When I go to galleries.ringstadfoto.no in my browser, I end up on your SmugMug homepage.

Did you perhaps set up domain forwarding at some point to *forward* galleries.ringstadfoto.no to domains.smugmug.com? If so, that's likely why you were being redirected to that URL. If you did do that, you'll want to turn off any forwarding for that subdomain (if you haven't done so already), so that only the CNAME for the subdomain exists. Note, it can sometimes take 24-48 hours for DNS changes to fully propagate throughout the internet, so if you don't see the changes immediately, just wait a bit, and once the DNS propagates, the domain should direct to your SmugMug site properly.

    Hope this helps!

Thank you Josh, you were absolutely right, everything works now, I just needed to wait. And you were right, when I first set up the subdomain I incorrectly redirected the subdomain to domains.smugmug.com. I corrected this error less than a minute after making it, but it obviously was enough to keep the redirect in some DNS server for a long time.
Anyway, everything seems to work correctly now, so the case can be closed, thanks again. :D
