Had a great time with the Snowy Owl, it was so cold on this morning shoot that the batteries needed to be change frequently like every 20 minutes or so. I hope you will enjoy this series.

Thank you for the kind words, and I think that is a rather interesting pose in flight with the legs hanging down, and that pleasing wing blur showing a sense of motion that catches ones eyes.

    Thank you again.

Wow! What amazing shots! #3 is brightest and most crisp! I like the pink hue in #1 as well. If you can answer these......how far was this owl from you? What lens did you use? Since it is flying around, these have to be hand-held shots right? Or did you have mono-pod and such? Thanks.

First of all thanks for the kind words on this series. That third one was in close, and it turned out well for me.

Sure I can answer your questions.

The owl was all over this morning from 50 feet to around 20 feet.

    Nikon D700 with a 500mm Lens and a 1.4 Converter on the lens - 700mm in total.

Handheld no not at all, the lens is heavy to begin with, so I used a Tripod for these shots and wanted to insure that my shots are sharp, as handheld I cannot hold it steady for long and tend to drop the lens position a lot and miss a lot of shots that way.

I hope that answers your questions and feel free to ask any more questions that you may have.

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

Beautiful work Dennis, your exposures are perfect. I often struggle with the white birds.

Think #1 would get my vote, Dennis because of the bg - altho' a difficult choice :)

(Interesting how the pink seems to follow the bird's outline)

Thanks so much Robert, and most people have trouble with exposures with white birds. Most of the time I can get the adjustments right at the time of looking at the subject here in Ontario that is. But when I head to Florida, now that is were I have a little problem with the exposures as the lighting there is different then here.

PP, I like that one for some reason and you are right that pink does seem to follow the birds outline, and I found it funny how that worked out with the shot.

Dennis, these are just TERRIFIC! I couldn't tell you which one I like best--each has some special feature. Seems like this owl looks around more while fiying than other birds I have seen, and it makes for great photos. Wondreful! Best, Pam

Hi Pam, and thansk you for the kind words on this series of Snowy's. That is a good thing when you cannot just pick one out from the bunch. They do tend to look around a lot, and you are maybe right about doing this more then any other bird and always on the lookout for food.

    Thank you again.
