Fill flash for a backlit sunlit subject - looks pretty good. Did you dial in some flash exposure compensation? I might have increased the power of the flash slightly with some flash exposure compensation for this shot.

With a 20D, the 580ex will fit like duck soup!! Shoot in Av mode in this kind of lighting for best results. Avoid the basic zones if you know how eg; avoid portrait, landscape, macro, etc and use Av or Tv or P as your preferred modes if you understand photograhic exposure.

In Av, the exposure will be made for the overall background illumination and the flsh will be made for the near focused area. May need to adjust the flash expsosure compensation by the dial on the back of the flash unit.

I took the shot in manual mode. I really like setting everything for some reason but I will try your suggestion. I didn't change anything on the flash when I took it because I don't really understand it yet :uhoh so all I did is change the aperture to about f8 and left the shutter speed at 250th.

P.S. this is the first time I have posted on a photography forum and I think I might get hooked! :D
