Star Trails at Joshua Tree

Hi all,

Here is a shot taken yesterday at Joshua Tree. The exposure time was around 2 hours and 28 minutes (single shot, not stacked). I couldn't believe how cold (22F) and dark it was there. While waiting in the car for the exposure to run its course, I kept imagining some zombie or ax murderer suddenly pounding on my car door at 2 AM and making Indian Curry afterwards (the Indian ingredient being moi). :wink

Looks good! Was this a single exposure or a series of stacked subs?

Heh Joel. How've you been? Long time. Yeah I am the quintessential Indian curry, albeit a spicy one for the murderers. :ivar

Ghaaaaagh! Most I've ever done was about 1200 sec. @ ISO 100 on the 5D3 and that had noticeable noise with a dark frame.

Hi David. It was a single exposure of 2 hours and 28 minutes. I would have gone on longer, but it was like 22F and was pitch dark and I was getting a little bit nervous being all alone in that place. I know chicken!!!!

    Cheers,

Did frost develop on your camera or lens? Or was it dry enough?

I think I watched a California show on HBO where something goes terribly wrong out in Joshua Tree.

I get the same feeling standing out by myself on deserted beaches at night. It is even creepier when someone all of a sudden appears when you think you are the only one out there. So much for peaceful evenings. :D Great startrail image btw!

    Nice. Lost Horse Valley?

For me, the trick to being alone in the desert is to be aware that I am alone in the desert. I enjoy the solitude.
    Anybody can do it.

It was dry David. No frost, fogging etc. Was really nice. Thank goodness I did not see that show, else I would have been even more nervous. Although I don't think these murderer want us colored people. *badaboom*.

Laughing.gif. Yeah I hear you. I have done this alone thing a little too often now. The worst was when I had hiked 8 miles from Yosemite Valley to the summit of Upper Yosemite Falls (with 40 lbs of camera gear - I know, ridiculous) and decided to stay there for sunset. Well as luck would have it, I got lost (took a wrong turn) while coming down in the darkness and had to spend the night there in the cold and surrounded by ye old ghosts! eek7.gif

Great eye. Yeah it is Lost Horse Valley. I could not find better trees elsewhere. The ones I really wanted were too near the road and I had a few cars passing by (even at 2 AM). So decided to walk further away from the road, where the light wouldn't blow out the landscape exposure.

Very nice! I used to hang out with my parents when they shot star trails out at Jumbo Rocks back in the film days. Joshua Tree is such a cool park.
