The lower image was taken one morning when the warm (non-freezing) fog had been burned off down into the valley. Before sunrise, the top of the fog was above the elevation of the camera position. The next evening, a cold front came through and dropped the new snow (1-2") in the top image and left the White Mountains, behind the camera, and the Sierras, in the image, sheathed in storm cloud after sunrise. The shadows in both images are very similar, which is consistent with the 24 hour difference between the images. The peaks are Mammoth Mountain, the Minarets, Ritter and Banner in the cloud.

    Thanks for the kind words.

The two original panoramas were shot as 10 images in portrait orientation with a D800e. They were stitched down to about 150 Mpix partly because of overlap and partly because air quality over the 20 to 30 miles to the mountains didn't justify maintaining the full sensor resolution.
