Canon 300/2.8 IS vs NON-IS for Sports?

Anybody have experience with the two lenses? I'm talking about the Mark 1 IS vs the older non-IS version. From my googling I gather that the non-IS is heavier and the IS version has better AF and is a little sharper with a little less CA. I don't care about IS for sports, but if the AF is noticeably better, especially with a 1.4xTCIII, it could be a dealmaker. Is it?
Thanks.
Thanks.

An "accurate" reproduction of a scene and a good photograph are often two different things.
