Maximum Resolution

Hi everyone,

I haven't been on the Forum in a very long time....not due to a lack of interest assure you ! In these days of increased image resolution and larger monitors, I don't quite know how to make my images larger on Smugmug. I am uploading pictures that are predominately 1920x1200. We have four choices from which to choose under "Style." No choices will produce an image that is close to 1920x1200. That is the resolution I use on my monitor, and the pictures don't come close to being that size. I know that if I navigate to the right place in a gallery, I have an option to make a picture a different resolution relative to the one that I am viewing. Most people that I know are not aware of this feature!!!!

Is there a way that I can make the images larger using the gallery tools, or any other method that will render the photos near full size? I have been a Smugmug user for many, many years and this has been a pet peeve. I feel that viewers should be able to see something near full size with a minimum of site exploration.

Thank you in advance for any information that you may provide, or the possible education of an ignorant and frustated user.

Rich R.

Start with the "Smugmug" viewing style and make your browser window as large as possible on your screen. The Smugmug viewing style auto-adapts to the size of the browser window and will make the images somewhat larger as you give it a bigger browser window. The "Journal" view is also auto-sizing (in a different way) so you can experiment with that one too.

Further, Smugmug uses a set of fixed sizes made from your original all listed here: http://help.smugmug.com/customer/portal/articles/93250 and it uses your gallery settings to determine which is the largest size that is allowed for display.

If you want the largest viewing sizes made available to your viewers, then make sure you upload an original that is larger than 1600 pixels on the long end and enable X3 or original as the max viewing size in the gallery settings.

As I look through your galleries, many (not all) seem to have images that weren't at least 1600 pixels upon upload (like this one) so Smugmug can't display the largest sizes.

Thank you for such a quick response! I have created a gallery entitled "Resolution" which contains one picture. The resolution is 1920x1200, the same size as my monitor resolution. I chose "journal" as the style and "original" as the largest viewing size. The displayed image on Smugmug is somewhat larger than before. I also changed the "theme". Can there be a difference in the size of the displayed image using a different theme? When the "Resolution" gallery is opened, will the one picture therein be displayed as large as possible upon initial viewing of the gallery ?

The gallery and the one image may be viewed here: http://roamer.smugmug.com/Photography/Resolution/28257970_7FcBqP#!i=2390471137&k=tf76Zr6

Whatever vertical space is available Smug fits that window. Increase or decrease the browser and
you'll see this change. Click on the photo and it opens in lightbox where at the top all the available
    sizes can be seen.

Please read the table of sizes on the link I previously posted for you. Smugmug will display the largest pre-made size from that table that fits on the screen. On my 30" monitor, your image displays as 1600x1060 which is the X3 size which is the largest Smugmug will automatically display without the viewer explicitly asking to see the original.

Thank you everyone for taking the time to respond to my query. Basically, I was looking for a way that Smugmug could show the ORIGINAL image size when it is viewed the very first time. To jfriend: Thank you for pointing out the sizes available in Smugmug. I am well aware of that option, but that is not what I was looking for. I wanted Smugmug to display the original size when it is viewed for the first time. It appears that can not be accomplished. I need to be able to do that for a third party who is not at all computer savvy, let alone being able to navigate the site. I believe I know what I need to do and appreciate everyone's input. Thank You.

Smugmug does not display the original upon first view. It ONLY displays one of it's prebuilt sizes which is what I was trying to explain. You can get it to display the X3 size if there is enough room on the screen and the original was larger than the X3 size.

    Rich,

Original file sizes from most modern day DSLR cameras can be huge, and I think your client may be even more confused when they open the photo and just see a super detailed corner of the photo when they open it, and then have to scroll from place to place to see the entire photo. Not only that, but based on connection speeds, it could take a couple seconds minimum to lad the original size. These two factors together could get rather frustrating when trying to navigate a large gallery of photos.

If you use the built-in SmugMug "SlideShow" mode (Gallery Settings - Look & Feel - Gallery style: Slideshow), the images will automatically advance and on the second time around they will display at nearly full screen. That's about the simplest way to present single images at a very large screen size without user intervention.
