It's capable of capturing clear images with as little as .03 lux illumination (!). Check out the demo video at the bottom. Pretty damn impressive.

Most excellent and good catch. clap.gif

Sadly, this particular chip technology will mostly be for medical, industrial, scientific (including astro-video) and military applications.

Still, it marks a hint for the future of photography and videography in general.

There are no free lunches here (big surprise). The light sensitivity is obtained by making the receptor cells much larger, 7X larger than those in a 1D, in fact. So you end up with a lower resolution frame, i.e., fewer pixels. Depending on the application, that may be just fine, but one size definitely doesn't fit all. Still, it will be interesting to see how this influences future products from Canon.

Since you need 2.1MP for full HD video, a Full HD sensor will be same size as the canon full frame sensor. So canon can create a video camera with this sensor, and have the same mount as Canon EF

With a 50mm 1.8 and usable ISO 102400+ this will be lapped up of the cost is as low as a Mark III

This will also enable ultra slow mo video with shutter speeds of 1/150000 possible(enough to freeze motion of objects such as bullets)

impressive, maybe the new technology has some application for non-video

Yup, astrophotography. Most telescopes doing deep space have 2-3MP sensors.
So they do 8 hour exposures to get a deep space image. Now the same 8 hour exposure(dark window) will allow them to get much better exposures)
