Shooting motocross 2013
Hoping to pick up where I left off in 2012. Been shooing MX with a DSLR since 2008. Went from a D40, to a D300, currently armed with a D700 and a 70-200 F2.8. Been using the 700 since 2010, the 70-200 since last fall. Starting to feel like I've kind of got it figured out now and was really seeing some nice results at the end of last fall. Spent a lot of time panning which really helped everything, also was very happy with auto ISO on the 700 which I only just started using the last few outings. I traveled to Dallas for SX last month, should have brought the big lens into the stadium but was led to believe it wouldn't be allowed so played it safe with the 17-35 wide angle. I've been on the fence about a D4 but the dual format memory card just bugs me, and read recently also that the camera came out well after USB 3.0 so to have it with 2.0 makes no sense. I know if I buy a D4 within 48 hours Nikon will announce a D4s with single format dual memory cards. Who knows, I like the 700 and don't mind another season behind it.

and it is BIG.
thats Dungey on the left and me on the right.
Did you get in early enough to shoot some practice?
thanks! didn't shoot much practice, coming to Dallas from NY the 60 degrees and sunny weather and all the vibe/fun in the pits kept me out doors for most of practice. If I had known I could have gotten the big lens in the stadium as easy as I could have, I would have been more inclined to try and shoot more practice action. I did get a few shots of a local rider from NY riding his first pro event of the year, this is about hhis 3rd season with the pro's, #945 Stryker. I wanted to make sure I got a few for him but the 17-35 just doesn't (for the most part) cut it for MX unless you can be real close. I also knew I'd get frazzled running around trying to do it all and was more than content to soak in the pit experience, it was my first SX since...... Montreal in 1977! But being patient paid off and I was rewarded with being at the right place at the right time and got the close up of Stewart. He had just left the pits with the mechanic on the back of the bike and they must have forgotten something cos 2 minutes later they came riding back and the mechanic hopped off and ran into the rig for something so I had James Stewart sitting on his bike right in front of my 17-35 wide angle, perfect timing. It was really cool. I'll post one of the practice shots tonight of #945. He didn't make the heats but hopefully he'll improve. He's made some heats in SX before and has made the cut at some of the outdoor nationals. I'm lucky to have Unadilla and Southwick both within a couple hours drive, though Southwick is THE worst track for spectating and photographing. Just brutal.
