can't set profile pic

I've been trying for 20 minutes to merely set my profile picture on my new trial account.

I uploaded a pic, made it public:

when I click on "choose image" in "account settings" I don't see it. I uploaded some test pictures and I saw those (until I deleted them). Why isn't it allowing me to choose the above as my profile pic?

I was able to set it as the profile picture for you.

While looking at the image in the gallery - http://envoy510.smugmug.com/Other/profile-pics/28321363_j9pPxB#!i=2397337023&k=PPp5pfD - I clicked Tools > This Photo > more > This is me (bio pic).
