Hey guys. What's a good wide angle lens for around $200-250... I used my uncles tokina wide angle and really liked the shots I got with it.

What system are you shooting with? Camera brand, other lenses and their focal lenghts?

Hi, I'm shooting with a canon t3i. But am planning on getting a 7D this summer. I shoot sports and basically everything and need a wide angle lens. I have a Canon L lens 70-200. A low light 50mm. And a couple of kit lenses...

Which kit lenses do you have? Many of them go to 17mm which is fairly wide. Anything wider is pretty much a super-wide, and I'm not aware of any offerings at your price point.

I'm moving this to the camera equipment forum for a wider audience.

I'll presume that you got to play with a Tokina WA zoom lens?

If so, I doubt that it was anywhere near a $200-$250 price, which is partly why you could like it. Quality generally does require a higher price point.

The Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II is around that price range, but it's the Canon "kit" lens, so likely what you have. If it's not suitable for your needs, save up your money and purchase something much better, likely in the $600-$700USD range or more.

For an inexpensive super-wide for a Canon EF-S body (like either the Canon T3i or 7D) I can recommend a used Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM for $400-ish. Very nice image quality for the money. (I have one and I like it a lot.)

An excellent super-wide zoom is the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X116 Pro DX, but it's pushing $600.

An excellent standard zoom, which includes a wide-angle 17mm end, is the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM, but now you're topping $1000.

I have a kit lens that is 18-55mm. I did actually play with a tokina, I believe it was 11-17mm. I liked it a lot wide open at 11mm. I think I will save up and buy a tokina.

Tokina has never made an 11-17mm lens. It probably was the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X116 Pro DX that I mentioned before.

Can you be more elaborate by what you mean with wide angle? Ie. Fish-eye or 18mm?

the tokina 11-16 2.8 is good. The Canon 10-22 and Sigma 10-20 are also good choices for a wide angle zoom on a crop

I just picked up the Tokina 11-16 2.8 for my Nikon. Before I was using a Tamron 10-24 and it was pretty decent. 90% of my landscape shots are with that lens, but I found myself needing the 2.8 a bit more frequently so I picked up the Tokina.

The question is whether you need a mid-range zoom or a true ultra-wide. A 17-50 range zoom is great and plenty wide, while a 10-20 or 11-16 or similar type zoom is so wide, it really can only be used for certain types of photos.
