Photography in Rio - could I / should I ?

Hi,
I'll be visiting Brazil in a few months, and although I'm pretty excited about it, I'm also a bit worried - I've heard so much about the insecurity in the streets of Rio & Sao Paulo; how you can get mugged, not to mention stabbed or shot just for a cheap P&S (let alone a DSLR with "big" lenses).
Am I exaggerating ? I guess to some degree. Yet what I'm after is to know - what are my safe options ? Are there "safe" places, i.e. with many tourists like me, carrying big cameras ? Are there any organized photo walks ? Are there any other options ?
I know I'll be pretty sad if I had to visit those places, not being able to take photos.:cry
Thanks for all your help !
