To be totally honest, I've been perplexed by this rumor-now-official-announcement. In order to have a mirror *and* a reasonable size sensor, there is a minimum thickness that the body can be, and to support EF/EF-S lenses, then no matter how small the body is, the whole thing is going to get dominated by the size of the lens. Admittedly I'm not the target audience for this body, but I just wonder how many people are really looking for a DSLR that is smaller than a Rebel. Those are already fairly small, designed well for people with small hands. Seems if you want small and lightweight, mirrorless is the way to go, since both the body and the lenses can be designed smaller. I guess with the 40mm pancake this makes a nice tidy package, but with any other lenses, I just don't see the point. Maybe it's just me.

I think that you're mostly right, but I'm betting that this is designed as a "second body", "spouse's body" and "first 'real' camera" market solution. Plus there are bragging rights to have the smallest and lightest true dSLR in an APS-C format. I'm just suggesting that many/most DGrinners are not the target audience for this body.

The scene modes of:

Kids
Food
Candlelight

... seem to indicate the intended market.
