Excessive bandwidth of only one picture

Hi Smugmug,

It seems that i have one picture that takes up a lot of bandwidth. It is strange, since i never put it in an online forum and such and it is not a great picture.

This month and, if i remember well, last month, that image alone is responsible for a quarter of my bandwidth: over 400MBytes out of 2GBytes total. This seems a little excessive. This is the report of this image http://flyingdutchie.smugmug.com/photos/5157124-O.jpg :
Thumb: 197
Small: 176
Medium: 42
Large: 11
Original: 201
Bandwidth: 415.45 MB

It seems some other site is linking to this picture. Is there a way to find out who is linking to it? I tried google, but besides my own galleries i found no other site that links to this image.

Thank you.
-- Anton.

    Hi Anton,

I'm sorry, we don't have a way of finding out where that image is going. You might try deleting and reuploading, it'll have a new img number then, and whoever is linking it will have a broken link...

    All the best,

i have the same thing happening to me, one image (actually a movie file) taking up a huge percentage of my monthly bandwidth.

google analytics gives me clues, but doesnt solve the mystery.

is there a way to find out if we are being linked from somewhere else besides google analytics/statcounter etc...?

Mate im not real help here but what about moving the photo to another album thus killing any link someone has ? Then you can see if the traffic stops immediately.

And, if it was allowed by Smugmug, replacing the picture with a REAAALLLY nasty one... hard core porno or something.... hehehehehe :D:D

And then see if the linking site gets any complaints... hehehehe

Website access logs will show visitors to the webpage and where they came from. You might be able to track back the recent or repeated links and see who this is.

Another thing you might do is change the picture to something else. Something really really nicelol3.gif , but leaving the link exactly the same.

In other words. If that picture's address is http://www.yoursite.com/photos/thatpic.jpg

Take another pic and name it thatpic.jpg and hehe the NEW and IMPROVED:gun2
picture will then appear on their website.

Shame on them for hotlinking and stealing your bandwidth.

    I know - I'm evil.

Oops between phone calls and the boss interrupting me, others posted something similar.

    Here's an interesting site.
    http://wholinkstome.com/

type in the address of that pic and maybe you can visit the sites and find out who it is.

Moving a picture should keep all links working! That's one of the good features of smugmug, but you ought to know them - now you do mwink.gif

Just a picture of people playing kickball in the Back Bay Fen's park in Boston. Here is the copy of the original:

Moving a photo will keep the link the same. Have to do what I suggested above, kill it and reload. Then it gets a new file number.

Dutchie- it's being linked via your D70 community, I used the "wholinkstome" link above and saw that...

Andy, where is that 'wholinkstome' link?

A re-upload of the pic is not necessary. I deleted it, but i did a 'Make 2nd Copy' first. Now the '5157124' part of the URL to this image has effectively changed to '46467331'.

Hope I sounded not to harsh. If you're using links often it's good to know how they're working. Be mainly interested in photography is a good thing - that's why we're all here - at least most of us. :):
