The exterior rubber rings on my Canon 24-70mm lens have some white showing on them. How do you clean the rubber rings and make them black again?

If it doesn't come off (i.e the rubber wore down), you could probably just replace the rubber.

It never gets easier, you just get better.

You just have to clean it. I have found that basic rubbing alcohol and elbow grease works best. I use Zeiss Lens Wipes, because I have a metric crapton from a deal at Walmart, and they work well getting between the lines. I found alcohol works better than say soap and water (Windex didn't help much), and also using soapy water anywhere near my camera and lens just plain made me nervous.
See photo below, which also shows a couple of clean rows. (I know, yuck)
