Increase in Server Errors

For a little over a month Google Webmaster Tools has been reporting some server errors on my site. Where there had been a history of zero errors I began to see a steady climb. The old peak was a few days ago when it hit 46.

Today I received an alert from Google about server errors. Today's total is 3142!!

What is the problem?
