That's exactly what it was Richard, driving north on a typically mixed weather day in Scotland, sun for 10 secs, rain for 20 sec. Thanks for commenting.
Josh, The scene pushed the limits of dynamic range of my D7000. In the raw file the background hills were very dark. Most of the tinkering was to pull detail out of the shadows, especially in the hill on the left center, and those along the water's edge in the background, something the D7000 is particularly good at. The sun was occasionally poking out between thick dark rain clouds all that morning. The hardest part of getting the shot was finding a turnout to safely park the car. They drive fast over there.
