I had a little welding project to do and since I never shot any welding before, I though it would be a good time to experiment. So, I set up my tripod and my D600 to a 20 second timer and here's what I came up with.
It would be MUCH easier shooting someone else while they are welding, but you gotta do what you gotta do
Shot with a D600 and Nikkor 105mm F2.5 lens.

Natural selection is responsible for every living thing that exists.
D3s, D500, D5300, and way more glass than the wife knows about.

I used the slow shutter so I could get the longer spark trails, otherwise, the sparks would have much shorter trails.
Thanks. F22, I wanted to get a long shutter.
I am not sure, I won't be doing any more of it until I do a little more research though.
I've seen others shooting welding photos and haven't heard of any problems they've had.
Thanks Don, glad you liked it!
Thank you Sam. It turned out better than I thought it would.
Thank you.
Thanks Jared.
Yeah, I thought of that. I was using a 105mm lens, so the camera was a pretty good distance away, ~15 feet.
I had a 300mm F4, but I REALLY like this Nikkor 105mm F2.5 Ai lens.
Thanks. Yeah, I wanted to get the longest exposure possible, so F22 and 50 ISO. The star points are and added plus though!
