I always wanted to lie naked on a bearskin rug in front of a fireplace. Cracker Barrel didn't take kindly to it.

Thanks for looking in, Charles. The interior of this place is even more " rustic ", if that's possible. It's located in Penland, NC.

I tell you, Eric, you get deep into the Appalachians, like I routinely do, and you're liable to find just about anything. A little further up the mountain from this Post Office is the Penland School of Crafts....a truly amazing place. I go there a lot, particularly to see the glass artists at work as they engage in the glass blowing. Many well-known artisans, of all disciplines, are graduates of the school.

    Take care,

    Tom

At least they have a post office. The town I live in Vermont "borrows" two post offices in neighboring towns, one for folks in the northern part of town, one for folks in the south. The letter carriers understand it but it drives the UPS guys nuts, the addresses on packages are the post office addresses.

I like your shot, it feels "country".

Thanks for commenting. As a commentary photo, it's a favorite of mine as well.

    Hi Werner,

I appreciate you looking in. Everything within miles of this Post Office is about as " country " as it gets. Heaven on earth, as I see it.:D

I forgot to post a response. This is a great capture and I have seen buildings, gas stations, etc like this in everyday use.

That's a really nice find, Tom! I was up that way several times last fall, and I'll have to explore further this summer. The Penland School sounds interesting and worth a visit as well.

Thanks for commenting, Sam. It's good to hear from you.

Like you, I've seen all kinds of buildings in use that have seen their better days by far....mostly they're old barns or farm structures. Never have I seen a Federal operation conducted in such a dilapidated building. I will say, though, that the Post Office is in character with the rest of the area.

Those that are into the arts and crafts should definitely have a visit to the Penland School on their bucket lists. It's a truly fascinating place....very large campus, spread out over the mountain top. It's a rustic environment that invites you to spend the day...which you can easily do with all there is to see.

    Take care, John,

Great find Tom, and very well captured. The flag is in good shape as is the mailbox out front. Are you sure it's completely abandoned? I remember seeing a post office that was even smaller and more rundown than this one somewhere near Green River, Utah that was still in operation.

    Hi Joel,

No, this is an operational facility.....used every day. In fact, that aspect was what first attracted me to shooting it. It gave me the chance to make some social commentary about the state of affairs as concerning the U.S. Postal Service. Incidentally, I poked my head inside and found the " décor " there to be on a par with the exterior.

    Take care,

    Tom

What a wonderful place to stumble upon. Will you ever be able to get inside to take some photos? Wonder if they still have the old mail boxes inside?

    Hi Mary,

I'll be up there most of July and I'll go by this place and see what shots I can get. I took such a quick peek inside before that I remember very little about the details. I'll be shocked if it doesn't have the kind of boxes you're thinking about.

    Take care,

I hear that, buddy. That whole area is a powerful tonic for me. My spirit comes alive when I'm deep into the Appalachians.
