Changes in UK law ("instagram act") and the importance of retaining metadata

I couldn't see a thread on this already, sorry if it's already being discussed!

A rather controversial legislation has been passed by UK government which will allow 'orphaned' photographs to be used by companies, without tracing the copyright owner. The so called "instagram act" has been met with opposition by photographers, fearful that it will lead to a legitimisation of using photographs without permission.

One of the issues highlighted was that photo hosting sites, and social networks in particular, often strip the metadata out of photographs, making it harder for people to later trace the copyright owner of the photograph.

AFAIK Smugmug never does this with downloads, which is good - so don't change this! Thanks.

(would be interested to hear how you do in this test - no site they tested passes 100% : http://www.embeddedmetadata.org/social-media-test-results.php)
