Questions about SmugVault

I opened a SmugVault account today, but found it was not what I was expecting .

I had thought that by opening the account everything already uploaded on my smug mug account would be saved and locked up ...on several secure servers for instance... making it possible to retrieve any or all files already uploaded on my Smugmug....you know, just in case I somehow lost everything of my own.

Secondly I was secretly hoping there was the ability that a service like Smugmug would have the capability to literally make a copy of ever uploaded file on to a physical medium....like a CD, Flash or Hard drive. .for a fee, and send the physical backup to the owner as well..

My first impression looking at the SmugVualt is that I have to upload any files ...AGIAN?.......from my hard drive..? Since I have over 8000 files already uploaded, some of which I no longer have the files to from loosing a backup.....uploading all that again is just not possible.

Have I overlooked something? Are any of my initial hopes in vain.. ? If I lost everything today........how would I know everything Ive already uploaded can be retrieved......?...and would I need to receive 8000 files through email to get it all back...?

Apologies if this topic has already been awnsered a hundred times........

Dave

    Hi Dave,

When you upload JPGS to SmugMug, they are secure. We have many back up systems in place to ensure that these JPG files are not going anywhere. SmugVault, however, is a way to upload files such as RAW and TIFF files. If you are a wedding photographer, simply uploading JPG backups to your SmugMug may not be enough. What if your hard drive with the RAW files crashed, and you were needing the RAW files to have alot more editing power than a JPG can give you? This is where backing up your RAW files may be valuable.

You can read more about the value of adding SmugVault at http://help.smugmug.com/customer/portal/articles/93324-what-is-a-smugvault-

If you are simply looking for a secure backup of those 8000 JPG files, rest assured, if they are already uploaded to your SmugMug site, you are safe!

    I hope this helps.

    Michael
