File names

Hi there all

I am trying to get my pictures more visible in google image search. Now, i have added plenty of captions and keywords but this does not seem to make a difference. I have been told that i should add key words to the actual name of the file/image. At the moment the images have titles like x1.jpeg x34.jpeg ext. Will it make a difference if i do this and is there an easier way of doing this than uploading all the images again?

Thanks
Spencer

As far as I know you can't change the file name after the photo is uploaded.

I just looked at your keyword page and I see you have quite a few keywords that appear to be long phrases as opposed to individual keywords. I would recommend reviewing your keywords to make sure that the individual words that you expect to see as keywords are there as individual words. Fix the keywords and give it some time before you decide you need to re-upload the photos with new file names.

for example I see this keyword associated with one photo:
greek orthodox church church of the holy sepulchre coptic orthodox syriac orthodox
I would be very surprised if someone used that full term to search. Wouldn't it be better to have separate keywords like:
    greek orthodox
    church
    church of the holy sepulchre
    coptic
    orthodox
    syriac
where each keyword was applied to multiple photos?

Look at your keywords page and you will see the large clumps of words that are entered as single keywords - http://photito.smugmug.com/keyword.

    Keywords need to be comma-separated.

In addition it appears that you have hidden the keywords under your photos. I see captions but no keywords when I look at your galleries. You should be aware that hiding text on pages can get a negative reaction from Google.

    Hi Denise

I think i understand about the commas. But what about the inverted commas, do i need to have those on every Keyword? And i dont really understand by this=( it appears that you have hidden the keywords under your photos. I see captions but no keywords when I look at your galleries)

    Thanks

I don't know what you mean by "inverted commas".

Your photos have captions showing but I don't see any keywords. Given that a keyword cloud does exist for your site and I can follow a keyword from the keyword page to a photo and I don't see keywords shown with that photo, I suspect you have used CSS to hide the keywords.

I've included a screen shot example from my site. If you look at the screen shot you will see both a caption and keywords under the photo.

    Hi Denise

I really appreciate the quick response. Yes i think u are right when u say that i must have hidden the Keywords purposely. I have been trying to make my galleries as slick and clean as possible. Will this make a big difference in Google image search?
Ok, when i say inverted commas i mean this " so the keyword would look like this "cairo","egypt","desert",

Quotes only need to be used for multiple word keywords.

cairo, egypt, desert, "east desert", "egypt's desert"

Inverted comma is a single quote '

from the Google webmaster tools page at http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=66353:
Hiding text or links in your content to manipulate Google’s search rankings can be seen as deceptive and is a violation of Google’s Webmaster Guidelines. Text (such as excessive keywords) can be hidden in several ways, including:
    • Using white text on a white background
    • Locating text behind an image
    • Using CSS to position text off-screen
    • Setting the font size to 0

    Thanks for that Allen.

Denise, i am really new to this and i am not trying to hide or desive anyone. I am just trying to have my Galleries as clean as possible whilst at the same time being noticed in google search. I am not really understanding what you mean, am i trying to do the imposible?

    Spencer -
Many people hide the keywords on their page. I was just trying to point out that hiding things on the page is not viewed in a positive light by Google.

It's your site and it is up to you whether or not you continue to hide the keywords. I suspect that you won't find an absolute answer anywhere as to whether that hurts your search results.
