This little insect was minute - I thought it was a speck of dust on a leaf when I first saw it.
Does anybody know what it is, please?

Hi Gemma, it's an Aphid and that's an excellent shot of it too. Lovely perspective in this one.

Thank you both very much.
It's a smaller aphid than the green ones that eat our roses and I didn't realise aphids could also be black.

Yep - colours well controlled. A blackfly as we call them here! (As opposed to a greenfly)...
