That Family Group Picture

I just read Andy’s blinky thread and had an idea.
Every Christmas my family gets together and of course we have to take a group picture. With 20-30 I explain
I'm taking multiple pictures so I can edit out bad poses. Esp. the little ones, never know what they are looking
at. I sometimes zoom in to fill the vertical and take a couple across the group to splice for a panorama.

I think it would be helpful if you all could add your hints and suggestions to this thread for techniques you use
for the following and anything I left out.

Assuming large group of at least 10
Formation of group
Distance/elevation of camera
Lighting
f setting ( I assume high)
other camera settings
Zoom factor
Focus - Getting everyone in focus
Where to focus

Thanks to all,
AL
