So many incredible shots already! I'm looking forward to seeing more. I'm a beginning birder - a "good bird" for me is one that allows me to get a decent shot. Here are three of those decent ones.
Red-tailed Hawk with breakfast:
Great catch! Congrats to both the bird and the photographer.
this is shaping up to be one of the best collections i have seen in this forum in quite some time - terrific shots in here! kscooper thanks much for the very kind words. davev, that swan is just incredible! how long did you wait for that shot? where was it taken?
Kentwaller, kscooper, whatshesaw, here's the scoop on the swan.
There is a town in Minnesota that has about 1200 trumpeter swans show up in the winter.
Upstream of this town is a power plant.
If you go to this area when the temps are below zero F, there is steam/mist rising from the river.
If you get there early, when the sun comes up, the combo of morning light and fog can give a person
some great photos.
On the day that I took this shot, I think the temps were about -20 below zero, little or no wind, and not a cloud in the sky.
Don - I've photographed various herons, but never the Little Green. Your swan photo is a powerful one.
Thank you for the kind comments.
The Greenie was shot on a canal at Lauder Hills (Fort Lauderdale) at close range.
I have no idea if that swan ultimately survived swimming in such a toxic pool. Truly a shocker to behold. Standing water in industrial brown field site, formed possibly by an old cistern or base of a smoke stack.

Tuning in late again here, and all I can say is holy SMOKES! Some purely WOWZER images here. In another life, I was a majorly avid avian (yup, with requisite "life list"). Shoot, I even once flew down to Aransas, TX to glimpse the (then) last 7 Whooping Cranes on the Planet.
But alas, not much of an avian photographer, mainly just peeking at amazing Resplendent Quetzals and Blue-crowned Mot-mots in the tropics.
That said, I just have to say:
TonyCooper - that "Angry Bird" is surely the epitome of the app (and I don't even play the silly game!)

Thanks! We were just amazed at how many were just sitting on fence posts like that. I think we came across 4 or 5 that day along that one stretch of road... and another sitting in the road.

Lark Sparrow singing in the wind:
I love the detail.
Bald Eagle landing:
Perfect!
Dave -
As others have said, your swan photograph is exquisite. Was it maybe taken in Yellowstone?

good gear; not enough time

I probably go there 3 or 4 times a year.
Thanks for looking and commenting on the shot.
