A male Volucella zonaria hoverfly- the first of these large hoverflies I've seen this year. Feeding on a hebe bush.

Very nice Brian. A very dark species this one. We're getting a lot of helophilus hovers up here.

Thanks Ian - Yes I've seen more Helophilus about than usual this year.
