Street Photography

Tonight was competition night at my camera club, and the
the mandate was "Street Photography".

One of the three judges is a professional journalist photographer.
Many of the entries were not what most of us would call "Street"
or "Documentary". People who don't do this thing just don't
understand it.

The journo tried to explain "Street" saying "it's journalistic
photography without ethics".

I got second place in Color and second in Black and White.

Are they too unethical for us to see ?

Not at all. There were 40-some entries in each category:

These are great Tony ! The color one is just priceless . The compositions look way too straight for street photography.

Really well deserved recognition on these. Looks like you learned by fire in our (good...) old PJ/street forum that I miss dearly.

One of the judges commented that she thought the color shot was
posed, and this may have affected her rating.

It was not! I was across the street from the art gallery and saw this
guy walking towards the window. I waited until he was in front of the
window and fired off three shots. This one just happened to catch him
walking in synch with the painting.

nod.gif The ability to anticipate is at the core of good street photography.

    Both shots are good. thumb.gif

Thanks for the back story.I didn't think it was posed at all . In reference to my comment regarding the compositions being to straight was meant to imply that street shots need not be perfect. It was a very decisive moment and a great skill to have. As Henri Cartier Bresson used to say focus fast, shoot quick and scram. Well done !

Tony, I enjoyed both images very much, as well as the ensuing discussion of "street".
