Why is this stupid magnifying glass looking thing suddenly showing up?

Baxter01-L.jpg

How can I get rid of the darn things PERMANENTLY? I never asked for them and never saw them before tonight!

This is becoming like the PITA Facebook with things popping up that were never asked for. I like my smugmug as it is and don't want it changed UNLESS I DECIDE TO CHANGE IT.

I am also getting intrusions like this on my smugmug. Is it my computer or smugmug doing this?

Looks like you've got some kind of virus thing going on. I'd guess the "Facebook" thing is probably not anything to do with Facebook.

If you have a virus scanner installed, make sure you're up to date with all of its files and run it. If you don't have a virus scanner, you can look into something like AVG (has a free version).

Yep, definitely looks like some kind of malware. It might also be an addon / extension installed in your browser that's causing this. You could try if it's also showing if you use a different browser. Disable all addons / extensions to see if that removes it.
Of course, a full system scan with a virus scanner is still recommended. In addition, you might want to try a malware/spyware removal like the free Spybot.

To be clear, this is likely an adware addon, added to your browser(s), and local to your computer. (It's not something others see or associate with your SmugMug site.) It often creeps in after you install a seemingly legitimate browser add-on or browser extension, sometimes activating weeks after the installation. It's nothing to do with SmugMug or DGrin.

Google for 'adware removal' for additional advice. There is a great amount of free software available, in addition to tutorials for specific removal.

This may involve you manually removing or disabling the adware from your browser(s) prior to the software removal. If you don't know how to remove browser add-ons and extensions, now is a good time to investigate that process.

Ultimately, a computer shop or local school techie or other computer guru may need to be involved.

Ah sorry to see that. Like Ziggy, Sebastian and Ian have stated, we can tell you those are 100% not coming from SmugMug at all. They have given you great info already, but Virus scanning and pop up blocking would be a good start to eliminate this annoyance.

    Good luck!
