Sync folders to SmugMug

Hey, all.

Apologies if this is in the wrong forum, but it didn't really seem like it fit in any of the others.

I just recently joined SmugMug, so I'm now going through my photos and uploading. I have been looking for a way to sync folders to SmugMug without needing to manually create a gallery for each photo I want to upload. I have a large number of folders, and manually going through, creating a gallery, and uploading them using the click-and-drag method in Lightroom would be more than a little cumbersome.

I'm using the SmugMug Publish plugin in Lightroom 5 at the moment, to try and get some things started, but it's taking a long time. Is there something I'm missing, or do I really need to move everything manually?

Thanks,
10thDoctor

You can try one of the third party apps on our help page. http://help.smugmug.com/customer/portal/articles/84267-hacks-and-apps-third-party-uploaders-downloads-migration-tools-and-utilities

Once you have them created, it's very easy to maintain them using the Lightroom plugin.

Okay, thanks! I'll try a few, and see how they work out.

    I appreciate the help!

smugftp.com is an ideal service for this. It's very quick because you can just use ftp to upload your images lightning quick.

I'm trying PicBackMan at the moment, but I'll keep smugftp in mind in case I have any problems.

    Uploading quickly does sound ideal!

    Same boat...
If you haven't migrated to the new SmugMug and you are a Windows user, Star*Explorer is unbelievably awesome for what you are trying to do. It will not only sync folders, but will handle subfolders as well. Click a category and subcategory, then drag the entire folder (or even multiple folders) into the window, and it will process and upload, automatically naming your gallery, etc. Skips duplicates too, handles multiple upload threads, allows bandwidth management, manages gallery settings. A brilliant tool, and well worth the license fee. An absolute bargain for the time it saves you. I'm pretty sure it regrows lost hair or something as well.

I upload from my cameras once every couple of weeks and usually have three or four new galleries - Star*Explorer handled with ease. Note that I am a Windows guy and I like to keep my folders the way I like them - Year, Month, Gallery. If you are like this too, S*E is awesome.

Unfortunately...it doesn't work with the new SmugMug. New SmugMug is pretty and all, but I'm REALLY ticked because it broke Star*Explorer. I would never have migrated if I had known this was the case - I either should have paid closer attention to the migration docs or SM should have put in big giant block letters THIS MAY BREAK YOUR FAVORITE THIRD PARTY UPLOADER. I was probably too eager to notice the warnings anyway.

So I'm crossing my fingers that S*E gets an update, and I'll gladly pay a new license fee given the amount of changes here. I'm trying SendtoSmugMug, which is better than nothing but still requires too much manual intervention. I'm also trying LR5, which uploads but as you've seen requires a lot of handholding. Honestly it's easier to use the SmugMug uploader than use LR5, at least as far as I can tell. I'm sure LR5 is brilliant once you've published.

So if S*E folks are out there...PLEASE update. I'm considering alternate photo services right now...it's just too hard to manage SM as it is without S*E!

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately, I've already migrated to the new SmugMug. I'm in the same boat now with PicBackMan as you are with Star*Explorer... it doesn't work too well with the new interface. I've been using KomodoDrop in the meantime-- I tried getting SmugFTP, but the site was down during the week that I tried to access it (though I just checked, and it's apparently up again).

Thanks for the recommendation, I'll check out S*E after it's updated!
