The HSM on my 50mm F1.4 sigma that I recently purchased less than a year ago has failed. It just stopped working one morning. I've been reading things that HSM on sigmas has been a problem for other people as far as failing. I'm wondering if this is a common occurance, if I should send it back to get it repaired, or if I should ditch out on Sigma altogether now.

Anyone have experience with a failing sigma HSM?

Isn't a year within the warranty period?

I believe so, but I'm greatly disappointed with sigma in this one. It seems to be from bad engineering. One of the rings in there is painted black so that it has less friction, but the paint wears out and then it seizes the motor and fails. Seems to be a Sigma thing, so even if it gets repaired, it'll probably fail again. I'm thinking of moving to a Nikon system.

I'd still get it repaired under warranty so you can sell it in good faith. Once you get it back, you can decide whether to keep it or not. Just my 2c.

ETA: I don't own one, but that lens is super-highly regarded by many, so you shouldn't have trouble selling it.
