Just a granddad shot, but it was the last game of the season
for my grandson.

I love the colour and clarity here; the intensity and concentration of that look is superb. He is focused totally on that ball.
I think you could emphasize the action more by cropping much much tighter - portrait crop to essentially include only the ball, your grandson and the umpire.
I would keep this version for context and the cropped version for "action".
    Love it!

Yep, terrific shot. Color balance is a little warm for my taste, but it is what it is. But yes, this needs a judicious crop to really bring it to top level. That done, it will be one of the better youth baseball photos I've seen recently.

This better? I crop all the baseball shots to 6" x 4", and usually landscape,
for other purposes. But, this one does look better in portrait.

The problem with this particular field is that the dirt is red clay in the
base paths, and toning that down is difficult.

    Yes, that is better.

You can pull a pretty good white balance by using that aluminum fence pole right behind the referee. That should get you pretty close.

Much better. There is no question what the subject of this image is. The eye is contained to the boy and the ball before exploring elsewhere. But my eye keeps coming back to the boy's face. I'm sure he will be over-the-moon with this shot.
