Can't get categories to display on homepage!

Having watched the new live Smugmug demo and been impressed by the new designs, I'm not impressed by the claim that it is extremely straightforward and simple to build or migrate your site. I think I have a decent knowledge of computers/websites etc so why can't I apply the new designs to my existing Smugmug and keep the main categories I already have?

For example....I have 'People' 'Places' Weddings' 'Commercial' etc as my main categories....that's all I want to display on my homepage but I can't figure out how to do it...when I try to edit it wont let me just keep the top level categories, it want to display sub-categories and folders within them, all on the homepage :(

Anyone else got this problem?

Yes, I'm having the same problem. I want to be able to display categories on my homepage, but there seems to be only the option of displaying a specific gallery. I want people at my homepage to see "Weddings," "Concerts," and "Events," and "Travel," my main categories, each of which contains a number of galleries, and which I had the option of displaying under the old setup.

Is this possible in some Themes, but not others? If there are different capabilities with different themes, it would be good to know.

Glad I'm not the only one and you understood what I was trying to explain. Would be really poor if you cannot use some designs because they want to display just individual galleries :( Hope we are both just missing something....

I've been going through a few of the designs and some are only allowing individual images on the homepage too, and not even galleries...in fact, I cannot find one design that simply applies a new basic design but keeps my layout of categories on the homepage. It just doesn't work!!! And even if it does, it is not simple like they made out on the live broadcast!

I had to randomly pick a theme and delete every box one by one to create a blank slate and start over. I notice that "Theme" is sometimes used to mean "Template", and sometimes to mean a color scheme.

"Categories" should have been migrated to become "Folders". Try dragging a "Folders" content block (under the "Navigation" category) onto the page. You can then choose which Folders to display with the "Select From" option.

Oh no. The old consistent-language thing is rearing its ugly head there too? That's one hope I had... dashed. This is the kind of thing that good Beta testing with a bunch of us trying it out could have prevented.

Been playing around with this a lot, and from my experience, themes are contained within site designs...so you can change the theme of a site design.

Also, it looks like themes are stored in the My Themes section under the Themes tab in a site design. Meaning...and this is a good thing...themes you created within one site design are available in others. See the attached screenshot

Those of you having problems with a site design may want to check the Entire Site level in the site design. Stuff added there is applied to everything, so you can either remove a content block from there, or, while on the page that has stuff you don't like, you can click on Customize, which should give you options to customize that page.

I'm also having problems with all of the designs, even though the unveiling made it look simple. The first design I tried actually loaded up images from a gallery that is private and displayed them on my home page! Not good. There doesn't seem to be any way to get into each gallery setting, plus under each image you click on, the download and share buttons appear, and I never had those available in my current smugmug site. Personally, I'm not impressed so far. Hopefully we are all simply not seeing the obvious, but if it's that obvious, we should be seeing it, right! ne_nau.gif

Use Organize to view and change gallery settings (see attached screenshot)

Use the content block settings (the little wrench icon) to change what the block contains. Or, you can remove the content block entirely and start over.

I have already tried that and nothing! The first gallery I decided to preview has photos from a private gallery displayed, which I didn't want there. There doesn't seem to be any change gallery settings. The 2nd theme I tried doesn't even have the organize or upload buttons available. So frustrating! Can't we just keep the "old" smugmug, the one that actually seems to work correctly?

Click on "organize", "organize site", navigate to the gallery, select it and click "Settings" (see attached screenshot)

I wish I could do that but mine doesn't have what your screen shot has. I don't have any tools that make sense! Which theme is this screen shot from? I've been working on the Sophie and Zoe themes and I'm about ready to scream!

The Organize button appears regardless of site design.

Do you see the grey bar with the Organize button on your preview site?

If not, can you post a screenshot of what you do see?
