Hitting the "publish" button on new site

This is probably a stupid question, but I'm asking anyway! If I hit the "publish now" button while I'm in the sandbox does this mean my customers can see the new site and I no longer have the legacy site, or does this ONLY happen when I push the "unveil" button? I'm assuming it's the latter, but just want to be sure. Thanks!!
