If I change my smugmug nickname, what happens and where will the new name appear? Does this mean I need a new domain name? Sorry, I know this may seem like a silly question to the techy people out here, but I just need some clarity.

Thank you!

Hi Darlene, I changed my SmugMug Nickname a few years back and it did change my SmugMug domain name. So, if you are using "Nickname.Smugmug.com" as your domain name, then yes you will need to share your new domain name with friends & family (and customers). You can use the templates to show your "Nickname" on the main page, or you can type in whatever you like.

FYI - I'm using a Pro account but I don't know what level of account you have. There may be some customization differences depending on your account level.

Thank you for the info. I have a Pro account so would have the same customization as you. Now, if I understand you correctly, I don't have to go to GoDaddy and purchase a new domain name if I change my nickname? But I do have to let friends, family and customers know the different URL? I don't have the .smugmug.com after my nickname right now. It just comes up calmlightphotos.com.

In the legacy site, in the account settings > sharing > search > site meta title I have "Maine Family Photography" which then showed up in the browser title and bookmarks, but it doesn't seem to do that on my new site, which I did unveil today. Any ideas about that? Thanks!

You may want to check with a SmugMug Support Hero on this question. If you already own the calmlightphotos domain then you may just need to redirect the website to pick up your new SmugMug nickname. If you haven't purchased a domain name, then you may have had some customized scripting help to change the standard web address. Unfortunately this topic just went beyond my knowledge base. ne_nau.gif

    Hi Darlene,

When you have a custom domain in your SmugMug account, changing your nickname will not affect that url or it's functionality, at all. Your SmugMug domain url will change to reflect the new nickname. Your homepage can be reached using it, but since you have your custom domain in place, there would be few, if any issues.

The nickname will only be visible where you show it, so again, since you use a custom domain, your customers will likely never know the difference.

    I hope this helps!
