No Recent Photos on PW protected site

With new SM on my password protected site I have a multiple images window on my homepage configured to show recent photos. It shows when I am logged in as editor, but not when I log in as a visitor. If that multiple images window is instead configured to show images from a single gallery, then it and the images are visible. None of my galleries are individually password protected; they all inherit their privacy from the site settings. (This is a family photo site, not a business site).

This is different behavior than the old SM. Is it by design or not?

This thread looks like a similar problem, but not quite so I thought I'd post.

Update
For several days this was working. Recent photos were showing up on the home page of my password protected site. But now they are not for a visitor nor for myself when logged in to edit. The latter is an improvement I guess because the edit view matches the visitor view.

If I remove the password then the images show up under both views.

All of my galleries have External Embedding ON.
