I'm curious whether this photo speaks to anyone but me, I was going to post it in the critique forum but thought I might get a better response here with the portrait people...

Let me know what you think...

What an expression on this guys face. It definitely made me think.

A little distracting for me was the door in the bg...

Yeah, I wasn't too jazzed about it either, here's a less distracting version...

Much better. What would happen if you cropped around his face and made it B&W?

I was going to suggest a head/shoulders crop. B&W with high contrast
might add to the look and feel too.

I'm not whether the picture stands on its own tho. Seems as if knowledge
of the context the picture was taken matters.

Thanks Daniel, I'm worried that if I lighten it up the background will demand too much of the viewers attention but I give it a whirl and see what I get...

Thanks for the idea, actually I already tried it. Unfortunately, the problem with this one in black and white is that his shirt being the lightest thing in the composition becomes a distracting focal point and his expression receeds into the grays that make up the rest of the image...

    Thanks again for the input!

    Ian,

I hope you don't mind, I adjusted with Levels about 1 stop and then Curves to bring out a bit more contrast. I Cropped much of the left of the shot, because it just wasn't necessary.

I think the image has strong character and substance and promotes the strong chiseled features of the subject.

I like the fact that you cropped out the bg, now the viewer can focus on this man's expression and what he's thinking about.

this is what i'm talkin aboutclap.gif. now it has many possibilities and could easily be transferred to B&W.

Actually, everything about the photo, from the crop to the exposure was a deliberate, and considered choice, I was going more for a mood than a standard portrait but thanks for the feedback.
